What You Need To Know About Burn Accident Litigation

GETTING COMPENSATED FOR YOUR BURN ACCIDENT

The severity and aftermath of burns affect each individual differently, but in general there are six main causes of burn injuries.

  • Scalding: Hot liquid, grease, or steam comes in contact with the skin
  • Contact: Touching a heated object
  • Fire: Car, house, or even a campfire that has gotten out of control
  • Chemical: Skin contacts a strong acid or base
  • Electrical: Also called electrocution burn; when electricity passes through the body, and causes deep tissue damage
  • Radiation: Can occur from sun damage as well as exposure to nuclear materials

It is important to seek proper medical care for any type of injury, including a burn. Not treating a burn properly can result in infection and possible worsening of the injury.

Most people are familiar with the terms first-degree, second-degree and third-degree burns, but these terms are especially important in diagnosing the seriousness of an injury.

First-Degree Burn

A first-degree burn is usually what a person experiences with a moderate sunburn. The skin is red and painful, but there is no or very little blistering. This type of burn affects the top layer of skin. Most of the time, a first degree burn can be resolved without hospitalization.

Second-Degree Burn

A second-degree burn is more severe than a first-degree, and deeper skin tissue is injured. Many times there are blisters and bleeding, and skin grafts may be required. It’s also possible for the damage of a second-degree burn to get infected and turn into a third-degree burn.

Third-Degree Burn

The most serious of skin-related burn injuries, a third-degree burn goes through all layers of skin, and into the bone and connective tissues underneath. Because of the extent of damage, a third-degree burn is the least painful, because nerve endings have been destroyed. Severe pain can occur when a first- or second-degree burn manifests on the edges of the third degree burn. Skin grafts are common with third degree burns, and sometimes amputation is necessary. Many times, this type of burn requires months and sometimes years of recovery and rehabilitation.

A burn injury can be incredibly painful as well as psychologically traumatic. It’s important to have an experienced and capable law firm on your side.
